Classic Timber Boats – the renaissance is here and they’re in demand!

There’s been a distinct shift in the boating industry over the last few years – with Classic Timber boats becoming more and more in demand.

Harking back to a bye-gone era – these timber boats carry incredible history and prestige.  Like watching a vintage Ferrari or Porsche pass you on Toorak Road – these boats are dripping in nostalgia and are in high demand on the market.

Two boats in particular are the 60 foot, 1927 Sinclair and Morrison – Oomoobah and the 1929 Built 44ft Percy Coverdale classic timber cutter – Windward II.

Yacht broker Simon Payne of national marine business – d’Albora Marine – explains why these two are so special.

“What we are selling here are parts of Australia’s yachting and maritime history – it’s really significant and the wooden boating community are a significant part of the overall Australian boating population.  Every weekend we see Couta Boats at Sorrento and Williamstown, racing and enjoying themselves – it’s fantastic.  These two boats in particular are as rare and as special as they come.

Windward II is a classic example of naval architecture, precision and design – she was once owned by Sir James Hardie and he was often seen on Sydney Harbour sailing her in his jacket and tie – with a pipe to boot! 1929 Windward II

Windward II’s huon pine build is timeless and it’s rare to find a boat of this quality come on the market.  She has won numerous wooden boat awards including the Geelong Wooden Boat – Best of Show – twice.

Oomoobah – the 1927 Sinclair and Morrison 60 footer was commissioned by The Arnott’s family – of biscuit fame – and has been magnificently restored in all her former glory.  Step on her and it’s like stepping back in time to an era of craftsmanship and precision. Oomoobah

This amazing 60 foot timber cruiser pays homage to a bye-gone era where at every turn, you are reminded of her history and heritage.

Payne ads – “Both of these boats are collector’s items and we are seeing unprecedented levels of interest from the market.  Like most things – when these boats come on the market – we see high levels of interest as the timber boat community know these boats and there’s strong demand out there for them.

“Oomoobah, like Windward II is steeped in history – not only being built for the Arnott’s family but she also hosted General MacArthur on her in Papua New Guinea where he dined and strategized for an afternoon plotting his next move in World War II”.

With the weather improving – the boat market is seeing high levels of activity and there is a buzz in Melbourne and with these timber boats up for grabs – it seems certain to get even more exciting.
